Picture-Perfect Beginnings: Everything New Parents Need to Know About Newborn Photography
Those first days with your newborn can feel like a beautiful blur—tiny fingers, sleepy snuggles, milk-drunk smiles, and those sweet newborn sounds you wish you could bottle up forever.
Newborn photography is one way to preserve those fleeting moments. But if you’ve never booked a newborn session before, you may have questions: When should you schedule it? Should the photographer come to your home? What happens during the session? And how do you choose the right photographer for your family?
At North Jersey Doulas®, we believe preparing for your baby’s arrival includes more than birth planning. It’s also about helping you feel confident navigating those early days with your new baby.
Here’s what to know about newborn photography.
When Is the Best Time to Have Newborn Photos Taken?
Most professional newborn photographers recommend scheduling your session during the first two weeks after birth, often between approximately 5 and 14 days old.
Why so early?
During those first days, newborns tend to spend a lot of time sleeping and naturally curl into those adorable, tucked-up positions that photographers love to capture. Babies also change incredibly quickly during the first few weeks.
That said, there is no single “perfect” age for newborn photos.
If your baby is a little older—or if your recovery, feeding journey, or baby’s needs mean you aren’t ready right away—you haven’t missed your opportunity.
An experienced newborn photographer can adjust the session based on your baby’s age, temperament, and developmental stage.
A little planning can go a long way
If newborn photography is important to you, consider researching photographers during pregnancy rather than waiting until after your baby arrives.
Many photographers book newborn sessions weeks or months in advance and will place your estimated due date on their calendar. Once your baby arrives, you’ll contact the photographer with the actual birth date and schedule the session.
Where Will the Photos Be Taken?
Newborn sessions generally take place in one of two locations:
In a Photography Studio
A studio session provides a controlled environment specifically designed for newborn photography.
Studios may have:
Newborn-sized props and wraps
Carefully controlled temperature
Specialized lighting
Multiple backdrop options
Posing equipment
A variety of blankets, baskets, and accessories
The biggest consideration? You have to leave the house with a newborn.
For some families, that’s perfectly manageable. For others—especially during those exhausting early postpartum days—it can feel like a major undertaking.
In Your Home
Lifestyle newborn photography takes place right in your home.
The photographer may capture:
Baby snuggling with parents
Feeding moments
Nursery details
Sibling interactions
Family cuddles
Baby sleeping in their own space
Everyday newborn moments
One of the biggest advantages of an in-home session is convenience. You don’t have to pack the diaper bag, load the car seat, navigate traffic, or worry about getting everyone out the door.
And there’s something special about documenting your baby in the home where your family first began life together.
What Should You Expect During a Newborn Photo Session?
A newborn photography session isn’t supposed to feel like a race.
Babies don’t operate on a photography schedule—and a good newborn photographer understands that.
Your baby may need to:
Feed
Burp
Have a diaper change
Be rocked
Be soothed
Take a break
Be held
Cry for a little while
That’s completely normal.
Follow your baby’s cues
A professional newborn photographer should prioritize your baby’s comfort and safety over getting the “perfect” shot.
If your baby is hungry, feed them.
If they’re uncomfortable, stop and soothe them.
If they need a diaper change, take a break.
There is no reason to rush a newborn through a photography session.
What should parents wear?
For lifestyle sessions, neutral and comfortable clothing often photographs beautifully. Soft colors and simple patterns can help keep the focus on your family.
Most importantly, choose something you feel comfortable wearing postpartum.
You don’t need to fit into your pre-pregnancy clothes for your family photos to be beautiful.
You just had a baby. Your body is recovering, your hormones are shifting, and you’re learning how to care for a brand-new person.
You deserve to be comfortable.
What About Feeding During the Session?
Plan to feed your baby as needed.
If you’re breastfeeding, your photographer should be comfortable with you taking feeding breaks throughout the session. If you’re formula feeding or pumping, the same principle applies.
A well-fed, comfortable baby is much more likely to settle during photos.
And sometimes the feeding itself becomes part of the story.
Those quiet moments of a parent feeding their newborn can be some of the most meaningful images from the entire session.
What About Siblings?
If you have older children, consider including them in at least part of the session.
Sibling photographs can become treasured images as your children grow.
But don’t expect your older child to cooperate perfectly.
They’re meeting a new baby, adjusting to a major change in their family, and may be tired or overwhelmed.
Let your photographer work with their personality rather than forcing a particular pose.
Sometimes the most beautiful sibling photograph is the completely unplanned one.
How Do You Choose a Newborn Photographer?
Not all photographers specialize in newborn photography.
When researching someone to photograph your baby, ask about their experience specifically with newborns, not just general photography.
Consider asking:
Safety
What newborn safety training have you completed?
How do you safely pose newborns?
Do you use an assistant or spotter when necessary?
How do you sanitize props and equipment?
What happens if my baby becomes uncomfortable?
Experience
How long have you been photographing newborns?
How many newborn sessions do you typically photograph?
Can I see a full newborn gallery rather than only your favorite images?
Session details
How long does a session usually take?
What should we bring?
Do you provide wraps, blankets, or props?
Can parents and siblings participate?
Do you offer in-home sessions?
Business details
What is included in the session fee?
How many edited images are included?
Are digital files included?
Do you offer prints or albums?
What happens if my baby is sick on the scheduled date?
Don’t Forget About Safety
This is one of the most important considerations when choosing a newborn photographer.
Beautiful photographs should never come at the expense of your baby’s safety.
Some newborn images that look elaborate or impossible may actually be composites—meaning multiple photographs are combined to create the final image.
Ask your photographer about their safety practices, especially when props, elevated surfaces, complicated poses, or siblings are involved.
Your photographer should be comfortable explaining how your baby will be supported throughout the session.
Recommended Local Photographers
If you’re looking for a newborn photographer in North Jersey, start by asking friends, your birth team, parenting groups, and other local families for recommendations.
Look for photographers who:
Specialize in newborn photography
Have strong newborn safety practices
Have experience working with families and siblings
Clearly explain pricing and what’s included
Have a style you genuinely love
Make you feel comfortable and respected
And remember: you don’t have to choose a photographer simply because their photos are beautiful.
Choose someone you trust with your brand-new baby.
Your Baby Will Never Be This Small Again
The newborn stage goes incredibly fast.
The tiny hands.
The sleepy stretches.
The little milk bubbles.
The wrinkly feet.
The way your baby fits perfectly against your chest.
You may think you’ll remember every detail—but life with a newborn can be exhausting, emotional, and wonderfully overwhelming.
Photographs give you a way to return to those moments years from now.
And while you don’t need professional photographs to prove that those moments mattered, they can be a beautiful way to preserve them.
A final reminder from your doula team
Don’t put pressure on yourself to make your newborn session perfect.
Your baby might cry.
You might be exhausted.
Your toddler might refuse to cooperate.
You may still be wearing postpartum pads.
Your house may not look like a magazine.
That’s real life—and real life with a newborn is beautiful.
The goal isn’t perfection.
The goal is remembering.
At North Jersey Doulas®, we’re here to help families prepare not only for birth, but for the transition into life with a newborn. From newborn care education to postpartum support, we’re committed to helping parents feel more confident during those first precious weeks at home.
