What the Heck is Cradle Cap and How Do I Make It Go Away

Cradle Cap is an inflammatory condition on the baby's skin that looks like white, brown or yellow scaly patches that can be thick and crusty. It's basically the baby form of dandruff and is common.

The cause of cradle cap is unknown, but there are different theories such as that it's a form of dermatitis, it is caused by a common yeast that most people have on their skin, or that its transferred hormones from mother to baby causing too much skin oil in the oil glands and hair follicles.

Cradle Cap usually goes away on its own, but if bothersome for any reason, you can start shampooing your baby's hair every day with a mild shampoo which will help to loosen and remove scales. If the scales don't become easy to loosen, you can try to rub petroleum jelly or mineral oil on the scalp. If severe, you would need a medicated shampoo. A soft bristled brush can also be useful.

Cradle Cap usually goes away by your baby's first birthday, but if you have tried the above measures and it's not getting better in anywhere from two weeks to two months, contact your baby's provider. Also contact your baby's provider if it's getting worse, if there is an odor or if it is spreading to the face and body.
